"We of the Class of '36 represent a portion of those who came to work for Amerada in the good (?) old depression days. Many of us will recall these were the day of NRA, CCC, and WPA and have now survived this Alphabet Soup clear to LBJ. I am probably unique in this group in that I expect I am the only one who chose his 'Prospective Employer' by looking them up in Dun & Bradstreet first. In fact, I had never heard of Amerada until I started looking up companies in Tulsa who had high financial ratings!! I wasn't about to go to work for one of these fly-by-night or bankrupt outfits. Not in those days!!" "We in accounting will also recall these were the days of the slant topped desk, high-stool, green eye-shade and I think there were a few quill pens lying around. The abacus had been replaced by a hand-operated adding machine and hand-operated calculator. I think this is where the word 'Manpower' originated as using these machines was kind of like driving a truck. My first job was helping post the many hand kept ledgers and related records. I soon migrated to the Partnership Section (We now call it Joint Interest - sounds better - we think) and after a time moved on to 'Special Assignment', whatever that was. From this point we were like Topsy - we just grew. Officially we are called the Statistical and Office Payroll Section of the Accounting Department (Me and about 15 others) but I call it the jack-of-all-trades (and I might add, before you do -master of none) section as we are still embroiled in this alphabet soup I started out with - you know, such things as IRS, FPC, etc. with a few statistics and payroll on the side. During this era we moved on to machines such as electrically operated adding machines, calculators, typewriters, and tabulating equipment, which replaced many of the old hand kept records. We are even now talking about those new fangled gadgets called 'Electronic Data Processors' where all you have to do is push the button and it does everything but salute and answer 'Yes, SIR!!,' and I think I read somewhere the other day that they had one now that will do that, too!" "During this one score and ten years I think my greatest contribution to Amerada has been the rearing of a son whom (I hope) will make a greater contribution than I. He is now a Party Chief for the company (I made darn sure he didn't become an accountant) and maybe he can help find some more oil for us." "Now as we approach our senile years and retirement it looks like we as still going to have to live with alphabet, like we started out, as we will be dependent on FICA (the official designation for Social Security), RIP (Amerada's Retirement Plan), ESSBP (the savings and stock bonus plan) to care for us in our declining years, and if that won't do it we will always fall back on the GS (Great Society) and PP (Poverty Program) and BB (Big Brother) will see that we are taken care of."
