"There are many tantalizing residences on the (White Bear) lake, proclaimed Northwest Magazine in 1885, but few if any are as tempting as this one ... built on a site which breeds envy, hatred and all the uncharitableness in the mortal who sees it. In 1905, their father, Jonas Walter Fillebrown, produce importer, purchased this tantalizing residence. Reluctant to leave White Bear Lake each fall, the Fillebrowns winterized their cottage in 1920, pushing Pollywog - the guest house in the rear - into position as the new kitchen and creating an enchanting studio above. After the death of their parents, Helen and Arthur continued to live here amid the mellowed Victorian furnishings." "The oldest resort town in Minnesota, White Bear Lake has attracted health and pleasure seekers to its shores since the first hotel opened in 1853. 'Upon its shores stand the rich and stately cottages of the people of fortune who seek the balmy breezes in exchange foe the heat and dust of the crowded, bustling city,' noted a journalist in 1890." "The Fillebrown House, the only stately cottage of its kind remaining like an old hand-tinted post card, charmingly illustrates those golden years. Designed as a honeymoon cottage for prominent St. Paul businessman Charles P. Noyes, this 1879 summer house was sold three years later to District Judge George Young."
