James Frothingham⁸ Hunnewell (William⁷, Elizabeth⁶ Fillebrown, Isaac⁵, Thomas⁴, Thomas³, Humpfrey² Phillibrowne, Robert¹ ffilebrowne)⁽⁵⁵²⁷⁾ was born in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts February 10, 1794.⁽⁵⁵²⁸⁾ James died May 2, 1869 at 75 years of age.⁽⁵⁵²⁹⁾ His body was interred May 1869 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.⁽⁵⁵³⁰⁾

James married Susannah Lamson September 23, 1819 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.⁽⁵⁵³¹⁾ Susannah was born September 2, 1792 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.⁽⁵⁵³²⁾ Susannah⁽⁵⁵³³⁾ was the daughter of Joseph Lamson and Susanna Frothingham. Susannah died February 14, 1870 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at 77 years of age.⁽⁵⁵³⁴⁾ Her body was interred February 1870 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.⁽⁵⁵³⁵⁾ Susannah was probably a free white female, age 16 and under 26, in Susanna Frothingham's household on the 1810 Census in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.⁽⁵⁵³⁶⁾ In addition to Susanna and Susan there was 1 male 26-45, 1 male 10-15, and 1 male under 10 in the household. There also was a Caleb Lamson household located in Charlestown.

James was probably a free white male, under 10 years old, in William Hunnewell'S houseshold on the 1800 Census in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.⁽⁵⁵⁴⁵⁾ In 1800 all of William's seven children were alive and all were under 18 years of age. If this is the correct family it is not clear why William born 1782, Thomas born 1785, and Charles born 1789 are not accounted for in the census of the household.

James traveled to England circa 1808.⁽⁵⁵⁴⁶⁾ "None of his family, he wrote, were, or had been, for a very long while, at least, and on his mother's side even longer, the Frothinghams, indeed, since 1630, had been peculiarly home and land people. He, however, had a strong desire to go to sea, and to explore the world, as ther were more chances then than now for doing. When young, he thus became one of the class of active and enterprising men, who during the earlier decades of the republic, established themselves and mercantile houses in foreign countries. He studied arithmetic and navigation, and when fourteen years old began by a voyage to the Mediterranean and England, made adventurous by Algerine pirates and the great European conflict."

James traveled to Sandwich Islands circa 1815.⁽⁵⁵⁴⁷⁾ "During the war, 1812-15, when American commerce was kept off the high seas, he was forced to remain at home, but as soon as he was twenty-one, and peace was declared, he went to the west coast of America, and to what were then called the Sandwich Islands."

James Frothingham Hunnewell Jr.⁽⁵⁵⁶⁰⁾ was born in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts July 3, 1832.⁽⁵⁵⁶¹⁾ James married Sarah Melville Farnsworth April 3, 1872 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.⁽⁵⁵⁶²⁾ Sarah⁽⁵⁵⁶³⁾ was the daughter of Ezra Farnsworth and Sarah Melville Parker.

James was probably a free white male, age 5 and under 10, in James Frothingham Hunnewell's household, on the 1840 Census in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.⁽⁵⁵⁶⁴⁾ In addition to James, Susannah, James Jr., and Ellen ther was a female age 10-15 and a female age 20-30 living in the household.
