Charles married Mary Elizabeth Smith August 5, 1864.(9132) (Additional notes for Mary Elizabeth Smith(9133)) Mary died September 12, 1888.(9134) When Mary was age unknown and Charles Edward Copeland Fillebrown was age 32 they became the parents of Jessica Copeland Fillebrown December 6, 1869.(9135)

Charles served in the military May 23, 1861 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.(9136) "He enlisted in the famous First Massachusetts Infantry, which became a part of Hooker's old First Brigade, Second Division, Third Army Corps. With the exception of Antietam he participated in all of upwards of twenty battles and skirmishes in which his regiment was engaged, from the first Bull Run, July 21, 1861, to Spotsylvania, May 10, 1864. He fought at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. At Chancellorsville a buckshot passed through the bridge of his nose. At Gettysburg, July 3rd, a shrapnel entered his mouth, coming out through the cheek. At Spotsylvania he was prostrated by a scalp wound from a musket ball. After Gettysburg he spent about forty-five days in hospital at Newark, NJ and at another time a few weeks with fever in hospital at Portsmouth Grove, RI. His regiment was among those sent to New York to quell the draft riots of July, 1863. His last engagement was up the North Anna River, a night attack on the supply train by the Rebel General Ewell.

He was released from active duty in the United States Army by Honorable Discharge May 25, 1864 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.(9137) "He was mustered out by expiration of service on Boston Common."

When Charles was age 32 and Mary Elizabeth Smith was age unknown they became the parents of Jessica Copeland Fillebrown December 6, 1869.(9138) Charles applied for a military pension circa 1879.(9139) He filed for a Civil War Pension application number 273836 and certificate number 175336. His mother died when he was 6 months old "and her death being soon followed by that of her husband, Charles Edward was brought up by his grandfather, and always bore the surname of Fillebrown."
