Birney is deceased.(4825) An unidentified newspaper clipping states "Birney S. Fullington, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home on Main street at 8:15 Wednesday morning, July 10, after an illness of four years of diabetes. Since last March he failed rapidly and was confined to his room and bed for about a month. His funeral, which was held at the home on Saturday, July 13, was largely attended, Waterman Lodge, No. 83, F.&A.M., of which he had long been a member were present in a body. Rev. F. W. Hazen, pastor of the Cong'l church, officiated.. .... Mr. Fullington was a man of broad and liberal views and of generous impluses. To an unusual degree he had the gift of making and retaining friends and as a friend, he was always loyal. Though not a member of any church, he had a deeply religious nature and went to meet his Lord without fear. It was his habit to gather about him, every Sabbath, the children in the home, and explain to them the Bible. He will be deeply missed from the home and from the community. Burial was made in Lamoille View Cemetery."

Birney reported for active duty September 8, 1862 in Vermont.(4826) An unidentified newspaper obituary states "At the age of 17, he enlisted, Sept. 8 '62 in Co. E. 13th Vt. Vol's. under the command of Col. F. V. Randall and received his baptism of fire at Gettysburg, when his regiment executed the famous flank movement on Gen. Pickett's advancing column. He was honorably discharged on July 21, '63." "In response to his country's need, he re-enlisted Jan. 2, 1864 for three years in Co. M. 1st Vt. Cavalry, and under the command of Gen. Kilpatrick, was in the cavalry column which made the unsuccessful attempt in '64 to liberate the Union Prisoners at Richmond." "Five days before the battle of Appomattox, Mr. Fullington, when riding under cover of darkness, became separated from his comrades and rode into the rebel ranks." "He barely escaped capture, a bullet grazing his upper lip." "After 18 months' service he was honorably discharged and returned home with his regiment, Aug. 9, '65."

Birney resided in Nevada circa 1865.(4827) He lived there until about 1870.

Birney was employed at Fullom, Safford and Chadwick as salesman in Johnson, Lamoille County, Vermont circa 1870.(4828) He worked for the firm of Fullom, Safford and Chadwick of Burlington as a traveling salesman. Later he was a traveling salesman for Walker, Stetson, Sawyer Co., and Farley, Harvey Co. of Boston. He was one of the most popular salesmen in Northern Vermont. He was in sales until 1884.

When Birney was age unknown and Carrie Freeman was age unknown they became the parents of Hallard Dewey Fullington circa 1898.(4829) Birney resided in Johnson, Lamoille County, Vermont before 1907.(4830)
