He recalled seeing planes stacked up on top of each other on the runways, and every building riddled with bullet holes. There was a Hawaiian waitress in one canteen and the only English she could say to the boys in uniform was 'Meet me in St. Louis' as the movie had recently been released. Other Islands he stopped off at were Christmas Island and Fanning Island."
