There authorities found a badly damaged motor vehicle with two occupants and an oil truck owned by West Oil of Harvard resting on its side. Investigation of the accident revealed that a car operated by (his wife,) Hilda Tolles, 84, of Longley Road in Groton was traveling north on Longley Road when it crossed the south-bound lane, into the path of the oil delivery truck being operated by Douglas Peterson, 37, of East Main Street in Ayer. Ray Tolles was life-flighted from the scene to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.
