They tossed their arms and grinned and smiled, And on Scott's knee they jumped and piled And all the house, Was nix cum rouse, For several minutes! Scott tells us o'er of Mansfield things, And all the truth wide open flings, And to remembrance backward brings, The days of yore, Now known no more Except in memory stored away, To serve us on some idle day.

The above was written as per date, but as I did not send it, I resume: April 10, 1859 I beg you now to let me speak, Of Aunt Louisa's household freak, For don't you know 'tis fully time, That she should have a little rhyme About "Miss Dick," that hen of hers, Which in the house just moves and stirs And oft with spats the carpet blurs, And roosts upon an old felt hat And never quarrels with the cat, And never tries outside to rove And lays her eggs under the stove. All this seemed to my mind so quaint It made me laugh 'till I was faint, For I do not think throughout the land, Among the poor, among the grand, So gently reared and "raised by hand," In woodland, hillside, field, or pen, You cannot find another hen! Although it seems almost too bad, And makes me "kinder, sorter" sad That once she ventured out of sight, And got in a disgraceful fight, Misfortunately broke her leg, And has to use a "single peg." It makes me think of that old goose, With one leg of no earthly use, As on the ground it never put, But upward held its ugly foot. One other thought occurs to me, With which mother will quite agree It is that "legs run in the breed," Like Rachel White, Now out of sight, I hope they'll keep enough for seed.

If you think it worth your while, And will an idle time beguile And will be apt to please your fancy, you may read this to our "Aunt Nancy." 'Tis fully time for me to quit, So I'll not write another bit; But hope that when your patience learns, That this is from your brother Stearns, With an I.H. before his name, You will no more my scribbling blame!
