He was a sagacious business man, of good sense and judgement, and great ingenuity nad fertility of resources. He was a member of the Common Council of Salem in 1881, 1885, and 1886. He had a fondness for nature and art, and was a sportsman of much skill. He made a collection of birds and fishes, which he preserved and mounted himself. He also made a collection of minerals, rare plants, and natural curiosities. He was very fond of flowers, and gave a great deal of attention to their cultivation. He took much interest in the floral decoration of the Barton Square Church, of which he was a member and active worker."
