Henry Holmes9 Fillebrown(4994) was born in Waltham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts October 1, 1843.(4995) Henry died January 10, 1867 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, at 23 years of age.(4996) His obituary reads: DEATH OF ONE OF THE CALIFORNIA HUNDRED Mr. Henry Fillebrown, one of the California Hundred, died in this city on Saturday, a few minutes before two o'clock. Mr. Fillebrown had been unwell for a number of months, but did not take to his bed until Thursday last, and only then at the urgent request of his family and physician. He was a brave young man, and served his country faithfully, saying the day before his death, that he 'should rather have died on the field of battle'. All honor to his name. His funeral will take place today, at two o'clock, from his residence on Tehama street, between Fifth and Sixth.

Henry, James Fillebrown's child, resided with James in California circa 1850.(4997) Henry served in the military October 28, 1862 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California.(4998) "He enlisted in Company A of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. He was the first man to sign up with Capt. J. Sewall Reed and the Company. The records indicate he stood 5 feet 8 1/4 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair, and was a 'vacquero.' Before he shipped out he had a photograph taken at Higgins and Johnston at the corner of Clay and Hearney Streets in San Francisco." 'The California Hundred" was California's first full contingent to see action in the War between the States in the 1860's (the War or Secession). The Company left San Francisco December 11, 1862, sailing on the steamer Golden Age to the Isthmus of Panama and after crossing the Isthmus took passage on the stemer Ocean Queen for New York City, arriving January 4, 1863. They trained at Camp Meigs at Readville, Massachusetts. After the necessary training the Company, now designated Company A of the Second Massachusetts Calvary, were sent to Fortress Monroe, Virginia. Henry was a private and served as a Colonel's Orderly.

He was released from active duty in the military by mustered out July 20, 1865 in Fairfax, Virginia.(4999) " His service records indicate that Pvt. Fillebrown was absent from the regiment in September 1863 when he was sent to Washington with prisoners. He served as an orderly to Lt. Col (later Col.) Casper Crowninshield from June 15, 1864 through May 1865. Pvt. Fillebrown was mustered out at the Fairfax Court House. At that time, he was owed $40.69 in back pay, and a $75 enlistment bounty."
